When it comes to SUVs with three spacious rows, powerful engine options, and tremendous technology, Toyota is one of the biggest names in the game. It currently has three options that fit the description, and each one offers something slightly different than the next.
Today, we’re going to go into the details of the Highlander, the Grand Highlander, and the Sequoia, so you can decide which one best fits your needs.
Explore the Versatile Highlander for Family Adventures
The Highlander is a three-row SUV that combines style, comfort, and rugged capabilities. It’s a solid family vehicle, perfect for parents raising families in the San Antonio suburbs who also enjoy getting away on weekends.
The 2026 Highlander starts at $45,270 for its base-level XLE trim, and goes up to $54,675 for its top-level Hybrid Platinum trim. We’ve already given away that the Highlander is available with a hybrid powertrain, so let’s dive into that.
The 2026 Highlander has two engine options: a 2.4L turbocharged I-4 and a 2.5L I-4 hybrid powertrain. The hybrid model achieves an EPA-estimated 35 MPG combined. That's particularly impressive since the Highlander Hybrid comes standard with all-wheel drive for the 2026 model year.
The Highlander also offers a variety of drive modes. The ones you’ll have will depend on the trim and powertrain you select, but they may include Mud & Sand, Rock & Dirt, Trail, Sport, Eco, Snow, Normal, and EV.
Now, how about towing? With the turbocharged I-4, you can tow up to 5,000 lbs; with the hybrid, towing figures drop to 3,500 lbs. As for cargo specs, the traditional trunk area offers 16 cu.ft. of room for your gear. Fold down the second row and you’ll get 48.4 cu.ft. of cargo room. With all rear rows down, you unlock 84.3 cu.ft. of cargo space.
It’s worth noting the array of trim options for this model, almost all of which are available with either powertrain option. The standard touchscreen of the 2026 Highlander measures eight inches, but you can find a 12.3-inch display on upper trims.
A standout feature for this model is its number of cupholders. It boasts a total of 14 cup and bottle holders. Its bigger sibling, the Grand Highlander, surprisingly has one less, with a total of 13. If your crew is big on beverages, this might be your model.
Embrace the Spacious Grand Highlander for Enhanced Comfort
Think of the Grand Highlander as the Highlander’s big brother. If you transport taller passengers around San Antonio, you might like this more spacious SUV. So we’ll provide information in a slightly different order here, to focus on the key point: the expanded dimensions.
The trunk of the Grand Highlander is 20.6 cu.ft. With the third row down, you’ll have 57.9 cu.ft., and with both rear rows down, you’ll get 97.5 cu.ft. If you have a lot of stuff to haul around the city, the Grand Highlander has the space for it.
The 2026 Grand Highlander offers the same 2.4L turbocharged I-4 and 2.5L hybrid as the Highlander. However, it adds a third option: the 2.4L i-FORCE MAX turbocharged hybrid engine.
Kicking out 362 hp and equipped with standard all-wheel drive, this third engine option is made for adventure, bringing more power to the table while still offering impressive fuel economy. In fact, the i-FORCE MAX engine achieves an EPA-estimated 27 MPG combined, making it more efficient than the base turbocharged engine despite offering 37% more horsepower.
Inside, the Grand Highlander drops the base eight-inch touchscreen option of the Highlander altogether. Instead, every Grand Highlander trim level comes standard with a 12.3-inch touchscreen. Another standout feature here is the available leather and Ultrasuede seats. You’ll only find this option on the Grand Highlander—not the Highlander or Sequoia.
Unleash Adventure With the Powerful Sequoia
Now we arrive at the full-size Sequoia, which is designed as a more rugged, adventure-ready model that shares its underpinnings with the Tundra pickup truck. However, it also has a starting MSRP that sits at $62,025, signaling its luxury essence.
The Sequoia has only one engine option, a 3.5L i-FORCE MAX turbocharged V6 hybrid. So it’s both powerful and efficient. Now, while the Highlander and Grand Highlander are available with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the Sequoia comes with rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. That four-wheel drive option shows you that the Sequoia is ready for some off-road adventures.
Here’s another feature that indicates that this model is great for camping and boating trips outside of San Antonio: its towing capacity. The 2026 Sequoia can tow 9,500 lbs. That’s nearly twice the maximum of the Highlander and Grand Highlander, making the Sequoia ideal for those who need to take large trailers out on their weekend excursions.
The drive modes available for this model are different than those for the Highlander and Grand Highlander. It drops those more rugged modes like Mud and Trail (but that’s okay, because it offers four-wheel drive and a locking differential). Instead, it offers Normal, Eco, Comfort, Sport S, Sport S+, Custom, and Tow/Haul modes. You’ll notice those Sport modes there, ready for performance-minded drivers.
In the cargo area department, the Sequoia offers more cargo space than the traditional Highlander, but less than the Grand Highlander. The trunk area offers 22.3 cu.ft. of room. With the rear row down, you get 49 cu.ft., and with both rear rows down, you unlock 86.9 cu.ft. of room.
There are a couple of standout features for the Sequoia. First, its largest touchscreen measures 14 inches (the standard screen is eight inches, like in the Highlander). The Sequoia also has a multi-level adjustable cargo shelf system, which lets you create room for items of different sizes. So while its trunk isn’t as big as the Grand Highlander’s, it is easier to customize to fit your needs.
Secure Big Deals on Three-Row SUVs at San Marcos Toyota

With hybrid engine options, they can get you solid fuel economy when driving around San Antonio or on the freeways. They also offer modest towing capacity and come in a variety of trims, including some premium options for luxury lovers.
The Grand Highlander is going to offer more interior room, making it right for those with bigger cargo needs. Plus, it offers the i-FORCE MAX engine, which delivers higher horsepower than the other engines and comes with standard all-wheel drive.
