The Thrill of the Trail Comes to the Toyota Tacoma
If you’ve recently been looking for a Toyota Tacoma for sale, you might have heard the word "Trailhunter" in conjunction with the award-winning midsize pickup. This is a new trim for the 2024 model year, designed for overlanding adventure with a high-tech twist, and is the latest innovation from Toyota. The Trailhunter raises the bar for off-roading midsize trucks and invites its driver to go on an adventure deep into the wilderness.
If you’re new to the concept, overlanding is a newer twist on off-roading. The journey is emphasized over the destination, and the goal is to not just get off the beaten path but to leave the trail behind altogether while camping and exploring. This exciting new take on off-roading and camping requires an exciting new truck. That’s exactly what Toyota had in mind when it developed the Trailhunter trim.
What Is the Tacoma Trailerhunter?
The Trailhunter is the newest trim from Toyota. Originally debuting in 2022 at the SEMA trade show, the Tundra Trailhunter Concept turned heads at one of the most influential forums for car culture. The production version debuted in 2024 on the Tacoma midsize pickup.
Overlanding is the focus of the Trailhunter trim. Every detail is fine-tuned to give you the performance, power, and portability to leave the world behind to explore hidden horizons. The 2024 Tacoma Trailhunter has a base MSRP of $62,900 and offers an impressive array of optional features to customize your experience.[a]
With a max towing capacity of 6,000 lbs and your choice of a five-foot bed or six-foot bed, the Trailhunter is capable of carrying everything you need to have the ultimate outdoor experience. It runs on an i-FORCE MAX 2.4L turbocharged hybrid powertrain that cranks out 323 hp and a massive 465 lb-ft of torque. It has an EPA-estimated fuel economy of 22 MPG in the city and 24 MPG on the highway.
A Tougher Style
The Trailhunter trim takes the already tough-looking Tacoma and adds exterior design tweaks, making it look even more rugged and ready to ramble and rove. Available with either a five-foot or six-foot bed, the double cab can comfortably seat up to five people. The higher profile and extended fender flares make the Trailhunter as formidable against harsh terrain as Toyota makes it look.
Steel rock rails prevent rocks and other road debris from damaging the truck’s body. An ARB-branded bed utility bar comes standard and, when paired with available storage options, can help carry everything you need when you’re in the great wide open. Rigid Industries white-and-amber switching LED fog lights provide top-tier vision at night or in inclement weather.
Removable MOLLE panels on the bed utility bar provide more storage options. The grille includes heritage-inspired badging and an integrated light bar to create a leaner, meaner front end. Put all of these features together, and they add up to the overall rough and ready appearance of this trail-blazing trim.
Technology Ready for Adventure
Just because you’re going off the beaten path doesn’t mean you want to leave all the benefits of modern technology behind. The 14-inch multimedia display is paired with a ten-speaker JBL audio system and includes wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity to enjoy your favorite music, news programs, and podcasts. The Qi-compatible wireless smartphone charger works with most cell phones that have wireless charging capability, cutting down on the usage of cords.
The 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster has selectable display screens and data about fuel economy, driver assist features, vehicle information, and warning messages about potential road hazards. The head-up display will project this information onto the windshield to keep your eyes on the road.
Optional accessories include an integrated dashcam, a portable solar power kit, and a JBL Bluetooth speaker. An integrated high-output air compressor airs up your tires on the go. You can even add a refrigerator to your Trailhunter, with multiple sizes and storage capacities to choose from. There are also plenty of options to add an attached tent on top of the bed!
Optimal Overlanding and Off-Roading
If you enjoy the journey more than the destination, the Trailhunter is the trim you’ve been waiting for. When you want to leave the roads behind and see what life has to offer in uncharted territories, you deserve to have the confidence to know that your truck has the brains and brawn to go the extra mile. Steel underbody skid plates, an ARB steel rear bumper, and a high clearance front bumper give your truck protection to face whatever’s around the next bend.
The suspension includes independent double-wishbone front suspension with coil spring multi-link rear suspension. The high-mount air intake prevents water from getting into the engine and causing a stall or other damage. A-TRAC Active Traction Control keeps the tires from spinning in low-grip situations. The 4WDemand part-time four-wheel drive system has an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with high and low ranges for superior performance.
Built by Old Man Emu, which has cultivated the craft of creating suspension systems for the harshest environments starting in its native Australia, the hardware on the Trailhunter is built for stability, rugged capability, and ride comfort. The 2.5-inch forged monotube shocks and external remote reservoirs give you superior control in the toughest terrain. The style of driving and the weight of the payload are accounted for in this state-of-the-art overlanding package.
Safety Makes a Successful Trip
Every trip should end with everyone returning home safely. Toyota holds the safety of its vehicles to the highest standards. The latest Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0) suite of safety features is standard on the new Tacoma. Features include Lane Departure Alert, Automatic High Beams, and Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. Radars and cameras allow TSS 3.0 to proactively assist the driver through alerts and automatic deployment of the brakes or small steering corrections in scenarios where the driver does not have time to react.
The Trailhunter builds on this foundation, offering a Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert. The 3D Multi-Terrain Monitor shows front, rear, and side views. A Trailer Camera helps you see areas that are difficult to view while on the road. The Trailer Backup Guide helps make the hardest part of the trailering process easier.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, as the old saying goes, and the Trailhunter would agree with that statement. The driver’s side and passenger side have front and rear recovery points. If you get stuck while you’re on the trail, these allow for easier recoveries from ditches, water, or mud.
