The good news is that you cannot go wrong with either option, and you will get a fantastic vehicle; it really comes down to what you want most. Performance is a great place to start because it is one of the main ways that these two versions of the RAV4 differ. The 2025 model has three different powertrains available: a standard gas engine, a hybrid, and a plug-in hybrid.

With the updated 2026 RAV4, Toyota has dropped the conventional engine entirely, and the model now comes standard with an updated hybrid powertrain; a plug-in hybrid is also available, offering boosted performance over the previous model and enhanced all-electric range. If you want a strictly gas engine, then the 2025 model is your pick, but the 2026 model has numerous advantages otherwise.

Looking at these two vehicles, the redesigned 2026 RAV4 looks fantastic, but the 2025 model already looked great, so it really comes down to the aesthetics you prefer in your ride. Interior space is nearly identical, so you get plenty of room for up to five passengers and lots of cargo in both of these vehicles.

One area with notable improvements for the 2026 RAV4, however, is the range of tech features available, as Toyota has updated them significantly. If you're okay with older tech and want to save some money, a 2025 model is a solid choice; otherwise, the updated features of the 2026 RAV4 are impossible to beat.

Hybrid Performance and Efficiency

One of the key things to look at when considering which model year is right for you with the RAV4 (assuming everything else is pretty equal in your book) is the kind of performance you can get. There are significant differences in the engines available for these two vehicles, which is why we will examine them in great detail.

For starters, the 2025 RAV4 is offered with a standard 2.5L I-4 gas engine that delivers 203 hp. This engine has been dropped from the 2026 RAV4, so if you prefer a conventional engine that does not use a battery-powered motor at all, then the 2025 model is likely the one you want to choose.

A hybrid powertrain has been available for the RAV4 since 2016, but it is now standard starting with the 2026 model year. Looking at the 2025 model first, its available hybrid option provides 219 hp for impressive overall performance, with all-wheel drive (AWD) standard. With the 2026 RAV4, a 2.5L hybrid is now standard, and it has been revised to deliver up to 236 hp for enhanced performance as you drive. What’s more, the hybrid is now available with either front-wheel drive (FWD) or AWD, so you still get the freedom and flexibility to enjoy the kind of driving experience you prefer.

Not only is the hybrid engine in the 2026 RAV4 more powerful than the previous year’s model, but it is also more efficient (especially if you choose FWD). The FWD version of the 2026 RAV4 with its standard engine gets an estimated 47 MPG in the city, 40 MPG on the highway, and 43 MPG combined. Going with AWD instead drops those numbers down by just 1 MPG each.

With the 2025 RAV4 and its hybrid engine (which is only available with AWD), you get an estimated 41 MPG in the city, 38 MPG on the highway, and 39 MPG combined. For comparison, the base gas engine only gets 30 MPG combined. You can see that Toyota’s engineers have improved fuel efficiency significantly with the 2026 model, letting you go farther with fewer stops for gas.

Plug-In Hybrid Options

In addition to the conventional hybrid, there is also a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) if you want even greater efficiency. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles take hybrid performance and gas mileage to the next level by adding more powerful motors and batteries. You can plug in a PHEV (as the name suggests) to recharge the battery for its hybrid system (conventional hybrids cannot be plugged in), so you get some zero-emissions driving and great overall efficiency as a benefit.

Starting with the 2025 RAV4, it features an available 2.5L plug-in hybrid powertrain with 302 hp, making it the most powerful option in this model. This plug-in powertrain remains the high-performance choice for the 2026 RAV4, but Toyota’s team has tuned it to deliver 320 hp, providing you with boosted power and efficiency.

Also note that the 2025 PHEV model has an estimated 42 miles of all-electric range, while the 2026 RAV4 with its plug-in hybrid powertrain can now go an estimated 52 miles from a full charge without using any gas. In both cases, AWD is standard with this powertrain.

We should also note that you have a lot more PHEV options when it comes to trim levels and features with the 2026 model. The 2025 RAV4 is offered with a plug-in hybrid in only two grades: the SE and the XSE, which are both nice, but it limits your choices.

If you go with a 2026 RAV4 instead, then you can choose from four different trim levels for the plug-in hybrid: the SE and XSE are joined by the adventurous Woodland and the performance-focused GR Sport that has been developed with input from Toyota’s Gazoo Racing team. This gives you the freedom to get the kind of compact SUV you want, while still enjoying the power and all-electric driving of a plug-in hybrid.

You can see these are all impressive, but the available features are definitely the way to go.

With the 2026 RAV4, Toyota gives you a number of upgraded features, both standard and available. A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster is now standard in every RAV4, even the starting LE grade, along with a 10.5-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia screen and a six-speaker sound system. Higher grades come with a 12.9-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia display, and you still get a JBL Premium sound system with a subwoofer and amplifier. So the standard features have moved up, with some new options to take things to the next level.
